Hoy le presentamos a la rapera franco-chilena, Ana Tijoux. La primera vez que escuché a Anita fue cuando ella aún era parte del grupo de hip-hop Makiza. La canción La rosa de los vientos (1999) logró un gran éxito en Chile y latinoamérica.

Today, we want to introduce you to the Chilean-French rap singer Ana Tijoux. I first knew about Anita when she was part of the hip-hop group Makiza. The song The windrose (1999) became a hit in Chile and Latin America.

En 2006, pasó a la cultura principal del pop latino después de su colaboración con la cantante mexicana Julieta Venegas en el éxito radial Eres para mí (fuente: Wikipedia).

CBC Music la entrevistó y ha escrito: "Su albúm llamado 1977 fue lanzado en el 2009 y nominado a los premios Grammy. Su último albún, La Bala, que significa 'the bullet', también ha recibido mucha atención. El sencillo Shock se inspiró por el libro La Cultura del Shock de Naomi Klein y se convirtió en un himno para los estudiantes chilenos que demandan una reforma educacional. Tijoux expone las injusticias económicas y políticas que ve a su alrededor con gran música."

CBC Music interviewed her and wrote: "Her album 1977, released in 2009, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Her latest album, La Bala, meaning "The Bullet," is also generating a lot of buzz. The lead single “Shock” was inspired by Naomi Klein’s book, The Shock Doctrine, and the song also became an anthem for students in Chile demanding educational reform. Tijoux exposes the political and economic injustices she sees around her with some great music."

Mundial de Fútbol en Brazil 2014 | World Cup Brazil 2014

Finalmente estamos de vuelta en el blog y comenzaremos con el tema más hablado de las últimas semanas: La Copa Mundial de Fútbol en Brazil. Comencemos hablando de lo impactante que ha sido para quienes siguen este deporte y como equipos favoritos fueron eliminados y de la dura derrota de Brazil frente a Alemania ayer.

We are back blogging, finally. We'll start with the most talked topic in the last weeks: 2014 World Cup Brazil. Let's begin by mentioning how shocking it has been for fans when favourite teams have been eliminated and Brazil's harsh defeat to Germany yesterday.

Es imposible quedarse fuera de la cultura del fúbol, especialmente cuando un mundial se lleva a cabo. Hay banderines por todos lados indicando qué países apoya la gente. Aquí en Toronto, una ciudad muy muticultural, esa mezcla de nacionalidades y fans es increíble. Si estuvieramos en un país de latinoamérica, quizá veríamos una bandera de un país diferente al del lugar, pero en su mayoría, los países se visten de los colores que representan a sus equipos. Si visita Chile, el color que verá es el rojo y escuchará la palabra 'la roja' que es el nombre que se le ha dado a la selección.

It's imposible not to witness football culture, specially when a world cup is happening. You will see flags everywhere showing which countries people support. Here in Toronto, a very multicultural city, the mixture of nationalities and fans is amazing. If we were in a Latin American country, we might find flags from countries, but mostly, you'll see countries get covered in the colours that represent their teams. If you visit Chile, the colour you will see is red and you might hear the word 'la roja' (the red) which is the nickname given to the football team.

Pero este evento no ha sido una celebración para todos. Muchos en Brazil han expresado su fustración con el gasto público para realizar la Copa. Las demostraciones de descontento han estado en las noticias durante el curso de la Copa y nos han informado del sentir de millones de ciudadanos cansados de la corrupción e injusticia.
The event has not been a celebration for everyone. Many in Brazil have expressed their fustration because of the public money spent to finance the World Cup. Their discontent has made headlines during the whole World showing us the feeling of millions of Brazilians who are tired of corruption and injustice.

De Jueves a Domingo | Thursday Till Sunday

Todo parte un jueves cuando dos niños salen de vacaciones con sus padres hacia el norte de Chile. Todo termina un domingo. Lucía (10) y Manuel (7) viajan junto a sus padres Ana (35) y Fernando (38) por un fin de semana largo. La pareja ha decidido separarse, pero ya tenían planeado hacer este viaje con sus niños, así que deciden hacerlo de todas formas. De a poco este viaje se va convirtiendo en la despedida final. Es un largo recorrido; la soledad del paisaje y el encierro del auto van revelando la crisis de los padres. Los niños sólo quieren llegar a una playa, Fernando a un sitio que le dejó su papá, y Ana a un lugar que no existe donde las cosas vuelvan a estar bien. Es la visión de Lucía, distante y fragmentada, de este último viaje familiar. Tomado desde De Jueves a Domingo.

It all begins on a Thursday when two children go on a holiday trip with their parents to the north of Chile. It all ends on a Sunday. Lucía (10) and Manuel (7) travel for the long weekend with their parents, Ana and Fernando. The couple has decided to break up but has previously promised their children to go to the north, so they decide to travel anyway. The journey slowly turns into a final goodbye. It's a long route. The landscape's loneliness and the car's confinement begin to surface the troubles of the couple. The children just want to get to the beach; Fernando, to a piece of land his father has left him; and Ana, to a non-existent place where things are fine again. 'No' la película | 'No' the movie

No es una película chilena de 2012 dirigida por Pablo Larraín. El actor mexicano Gael Garcia Bernal es René, un publicista muy requerido en Chile a finales de los ochenta. La película se basa en la obra El Plebiscito escrita por Antonio Skármeta. El momento histórico capturado en la película es cuando las tácticas publicitarias comienzan a ser ampliamente usadas en campañas políticas. La campaña en cuestión es el plebiscito ciudadano chileno de 1988 para decidir si aceptar o no la continuación de la dictadura de Pinochet. La película ha sido nominada como Mejor Película Extranjera en los premios Óscar.

Celebraciones navideñas en Iberoamérica | Christmas celebrations in Ibero-America

Nos gustaría compartir un artículo en español por la BBC que explica cómo los países iberoamericanos celebran la Navidad. Es verdad que todos hablamos español, pero tenemos nuestras propias tradiciones.

We would like to share an article in Spanish by the BBC that explains how Ibero-American countries celebrate Christmas. It is true that we all speak Spanish, but we have our own traditions.

Un mismo idioma, tradiciones distintas

Le preguntamos a una amiga costarricense sobre las celebraciones navideñas de su país. Esta es su respuesta:

"La navidad en Costa Rica se celebra de manera similar al resto de los países latinoamericanos, siendo un paíss mayoritariamente cristiano, se realizan los rituales propios del catolicismo romano y se celebra en familia. Se acostumbra adornar las casas y locales comerciales con guirnaldas, árboles de navidad, portales o "pasitos" y luces. Es un tiempo en general de mucha fiesta y comida, y se visita a los familiares y seres queridos. Se comen tamales, queque de frutas y mucha carne de res y de cerdo, generalmente en asados. Se acostumbra tambien visitar la playa."

We asked a Costa Rican friend about Christmas celebrations in her country. This is her reply:

"Christmas in Costa Rica is celebrated in a similar way to the rest of the Latin American countries. Being mainly a Christian country, many Roman Catholic rituals, which are very family oriented, take place. It is a tradition to decorate houses and businesses with garlands, Christmas trees, nativity scenes and lights. It is time of celebration and food and it is common to visit relatives and friends. We eat tamales, holiday fruit cake and a lot of beef and pork, generally barbecued. It is also common to visit the beach."
