Chile's Fiestas Patrias | Fiestas Patrias Chilenas

I am Maria Miranda, founder of Spanish Anytime. During September I will be sharing how Chile's longest holiday, Fiestas Patrias, is celebrated. I am visiting my family in Chile during our dieciocho (18th)

It was September 18, 1810 when a First Government Junta was established to rule Chile. It was the earliest step in the Chilean struggle for independence, and the anniversary of its establishment is celebrated as the national day of Chile. Chile officially proclaimed independence on February 12, 1818.  ( Source: Wikipedia)

Fiestas Patrias means dancing cueca, eating empanadas, asado (barbecue), mariscal (seafood soup), cordero al palo (spit barbecued lamb), mote con huesillo and a strong terremoto drink. It is also a long holiday, so people get a chance to visit family and friends along the country.
